Beschreibung |
Thema New York City has always been a concrete place as well as a state of mind: Port of entry for immigrants, port of return for war veterans, the place to make a fortune or to lose everything, modernity’s realization of urban freedom and postmodernity’s fantasy of urban nightmare. As an imaginary site, it has served as the stage par excellence for the American dream to be realized, in all its light and dark shades. What makes this city so fascinating for literary and visual artists? We propose treating this cultural center both as a particular microcosm and as an example which could be transferred to other global cities. New York is a city that is constantly being reborn. We will look at how each new wave of immigration has changed the cityscape, how different boroughs have become the centers for different ethnicities, transforming over time. While we will be focussing on the period between 1990 and 2020s, we will do so by also looking at the history of New York City. As material we will use literary texts, photography, painting, films, and TV-drama. Inhalte und Ziele – Reading and analysis of literary and visual texts – Background information to this topical theme – Critical analysis of the material used Methoden – Theoretical input from both lecturers – Plenary discussion – Pairwork – Groupwork – Reading of film sequences and paintings |
