Beschreibung |
Thema English is a globally diversified language with countless regional, social and ethnic varieties. Referring to the ‘Complaint Tradition’ in English, we introduce processes of standardization and identity-formation, illustrated with selected communities (South Africa, Singapore, United States, etc.). We discuss how English has developed locally, as a result of British legacy and contact with other languages, and how varieties are evaluated socially: what attitudes prevail, what consequences arise from language attitudes, and how language is used as an emblem of local identity for speakers. Furthermore, as these sociolinguistic phenomena are ubiquitous in our daily lives, we highlight how they are addressed in literature and how they can be discussed in the classroom. We provide historical and sociolinguistic input, give a theoretical and methodological introduction to perceptual dialectology, and make literature recommendations. Together, we develop materials and suggest relevant topics for in-class work. Inhalte und Ziele – Learning about regional, social and ethnic varieties of English around the world – Understanding the motivation of attitudes towards Englishes, both standard and non-standard – Learning how attitudes towards English varieties can be approached and researched with students, especially in connection with class readings Literature recommendations and lesson plans of material that has been successfully used in the classroom will be provided. Methoden – Inputreferate – Plenumsdiskussionen/Fragerunde – Gruppenarbeit mit vorbereiteten Materialien – Fallstudien/Übung zur Anwendung und Vertiefung – Die Teilnehmenden erhalten erprobtes Unterrichtsmaterial und eine Literaturliste. |
