World Englishes in the Classroom: Linguistic Varieties, Literatures and Cultures

Beschreibung	Thema English has long ceased to be a language that is only spoken in the UK and the United States. Rather it is now a language of many cultures around the globe, as reflected in the term «World Englishes». In this course we are going to look at different varieties of English and literature from some selected English-speaking areas. In particular, we are going to have a look at English in countries in Asia, in Australia and the Caribbean and provide linguistic input, literature recommendations and non-fiction topic suggestions relevant to these areas. With respect to the linguistic component of the course, a general introduction to World Englishes will be given, with a focus on general models of English around the world, the status of English as a native, second and foreign language. Inhalte und Ziele – Understanding the diversity of English around the world – Modelling and classifying varieties according to speaker status, diffusion and use – Literature recommendations and lesson plans of World Englishes texts that have been successfully used in the classroom will be provided – Discussing ways of how the linguistic diversity of English can be approached with students Methoden – Inputreferate – Plenumsdiskussionen – Fallstudien – Die Teilnehmenden erhalten ausgearbeitetes Unterrichtsmaterial und eine Literaturliste zu Texten, die mit Schülerinnen und Schülern im Klassenzimmer genutzt werden können.
